Classic cars, good times at 18th annual Dandelion Daze

Car enthusiasts flocked to Holyoke’s 18th annual Dandelion Daze celebration Saturday, June 23, for a showing of new and classic rides.
A 5K run supporting UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies’ Patient Transplant Fund and a motorcycle poker run put on by Melissa Memorial Hospital for law enforcement charity Shield 616 were also among the day’s festivities.
Cars and motorcycles were shown on the Phillips County Courthouse lawn until awards were presented at around 2:20 p.m. Vendors also sold food and handcrafts, and kids hawked soda from wagons full of ice.
Robert and Sharry Singley took home the Top Gun award  for their 1958 Dodge Sweptside. Gerald Brown accepted the People’s Choice award on behalf of his son Keith, who is currently studying at Lincoln Tech, for his 1972 Dodge Charger.
Out of 47 entrants, the top 15 were:
—Robert Singley, 1959 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer.
—Don Donjon, 1951 Chevy half-ton pickup.
    —Ron Hubbard, 1956 Oldsmobile Convertible.
—George Sawyer, 1958 Chevy half-ton pickup.
—Jim Coghill, 1956 Chevy Bel Air.
    —Chris Skipworth, 1969 Pontiac Firebird.
—Rory Berges, 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1.
    —Annie Stephens, 1969 Oldsmobile 442.
    —Gayln Einspahr. 1968 Oldsmobile 442.
    —Clyde Einspahr, 1956 Chevy.
—Terry McAllister, 1934 Ford Hot Rod.
    —Steve Terryberry, 1964 Pontiac GTO.
    —Doug Reimke, 1966 Pontiac GTO.
—Brad McArtor, 1970 Chevy SS 396.
—Marvin Nelson, 1942 Ford Tudor Sedan.
The Phillips County Sheriff’s Department also let attendees climb inside their recently-refurbished, 26-ton Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected truck. The truck was acquired in April through the Department of Defense’s 1033 Program, which provides surplus military equipment to law enforcement agencies.

Dashers tackle 5K
The morning began with the Dandelion Dash 5K. The 26 registered dashers had the benefit of clear skies and a light breeze. Gage Sprague, 15, clocked the winning time of 23 minutes, 40.3 seconds.
Runners-up included Max Kleve, 24:11.2; Madison King, 24:46.3; Trace Gustafson,  26:26; and Ashley Gragg, 26:27.5.

Biking for a cause
Melissa Memorial Hospital’s Poker Run drew 11 riders and raised nearly $500 for Shield 616.
Anne Newman won with a flush, Terry Andersen finished in 2nd with three kings and Darwin Duester finished third with three 5s.
