Community garden provides produce; concept art sought

Phillips County Extension is continuing the work of reestablishing a community garden to serve the area. Colorado State University Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent Deeona Johnston said that prior to its current iteration, it had been several years since a community garden was in the area. Johnston is excited to help bring it back to the community.

After a hailstorm destroyed produce in the area in June, the Grow & Give program at CSU donated plants for the project. Plants that were donated included tomatoes, peppers, watermelons, squash and okra, among others.

Four grow boxes, donated by the Will Heginbotham Trust, have been placed on the Phillips County Event Center grounds. The intent is to have Phillips County Community Garden signs cover one side of each grow box, and Extension continues to seek concept art for the sides of the grow boxes that will not contain the signs.

Although Extension has yet to receive any concept art designs from the public, Johnston hopes that word will continue to spread and that they receive potential designs soon.
