Congregations forgo congregating

Churches think outside the sanctuary to stay connected from a distance

Although the coronavirus pandemic has limited group gatherings and required people to maintain distance of 6 feet from others, churches have found a way to stay connected.

“We haven’t been asked to stop being a church,” pastor Mike Brown said to his congregation in First Christian Church’s first online-only meeting. “The church has never been about the building,” he added, and it’s clear that he shares that sentiment with many.

Using platforms such as Facebook and Youtube, several local churches have taken their services online. This past Sunday morning, folks accessed the live videos from their own homes on computers, phones, tablets and even TVs. For some, it was a family activity. For others, it was a chance to connect despite isolation. Live chat features further allowed those participating to connect by sharing greetings, praises and prayer requests as they would in person.
