County sees 40% voter turnout

Out of 2,792 active voters in Phillips County, there were 1,139 ballots cast for a 40.80% voter turnout in the June 28 all-mail primary election.

Statewide, 31.76% of active voters cast ballots in this election, according to unofficial results posted on the secretary of state’s website.

All of the local races were uncontested, and all were Republican candidates — Terry L. Hofmeister, Phillips County commissioner District 1; Madene “Beth” Zilla, Phillips County clerk and recorder; Steve Young, Phillips County trasurer; Douglas D. Kamery, Phillips County assessor; and Thomas C. Elliott, Phillips County sheriff.

There were no candidates on the ballot for Phillips County surveyor or Phillips County coroner.

Among the contested statewide races on Republican ballots, Joe O’Dea won 54.49% of the votes over Ron Hanks for United States senator. Phillips County favored Hanks with 60.37% of the votes.

In the Republican race for representative to the 118th U.S. Congress District 4, Ken Buck took 74.07% of the votes over Robert Lewis. Buck got 73.26% of the Phillips County votes.

In the statewide governor race, Republican Heidi Ganahl beat Greg Lopez with 53.87% of the votes. Phillips County favored Lopez with 60.38% of the votes.

Pam Anderson won the Republican race for secretary of state. She got 43.11% of the votes, Tina Peters 28.82% and Mike O’Donnell 28.07%. Phillips County voters split almost equally between the three candidates, narrowly giving O’Donnell the edge.

Republican Richard Holtorf  won the state representative District 63 race with 71.43% of the votes over Jessie Vance. Phillips County also favored Holtorf with 68.02% of the votes.

Other Republican races that were uncontested included Lang Sias, state treasurer; John Kellner, attorney general; Dan Mailoit, state board of education member at large; Frank McNulty, regent of the University of Colorado Congressional District 4; and Byron Pelton, state senator.

Phillips County voters saw all uncontested races on the Democratic ballot, including Michael Bennet, U.S. senator; Ike McCorkle, representative to the 118th U.S. Congress District 4; Jared Polis, governor; Jena Griswold, secretary of state; Dave Young, state treasurer; Phil Weiser, attorney general; Kathy Plomer, state board of education member at large; and Jack Barrington, regent of the University of Colorado Congressional District 4.
