Day of Prayer observed May 2 at Sunset View
Every year since 1952, the United States has observed a National Day of Prayer. On Thursday, May 2, events will be held across the country. Holyoke’s event will begin at 7 p.m. in the Sunset View community room. There will be several speakers, worship music, a short video and a time of corporate prayer.
The theme for the 2019 National Day of Prayer is Love One Another. It comes from the words of Jesus in John 13:34, “Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another.”
National Day of Prayer was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. In 1988, the law was unanimously amended by both the House and the Senate and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on Thursday, May 5, 1988, designating the first Thursday of May as a day of national prayer. Every president since 1952 has signed a National Day of Prayer proclamation.
