Develop proper recycling habits
While it does look similar to a dumpster, the blue recycling container on the northwest side of the City office at 407 E. Denver St. has its own particular set of guidelines that must be followed.
Marick’s Waste Disposal, located in Crook, is the company that handles the recycling collected in Holyoke. The City received a notice from MWD that Holyoke’s recycle box has recently contained too many items that are not allowed.
This is not a single-stream container, and different materials need to be separated and put through the appropriate doors. Each recycling facility is different, so take a moment to learn what is and is not allowed at the Holyoke location. Taking care to sort and recycle only the accepted items is essential to maintaining safety and efficiency.
Bag paper
There is one section of the container for paper. Any white office paper should be bagged beforehand. Any other paper, including newspapers, magazines and colored paper, can be placed in the container directly.
Sort plastic
Only certain plastics are permitted. First, the item should have a 1 or 2 recycling symbol. This will include items like water bottles, food tubs and milk jugs. Remove the lids from bottles; they cannot be recycled here.
