Donated funds disbursed for March fire

Three short months ago, things around the Haxtun community changed in the blink of an eye. Animals perished, farm ground charred, and homes were destroyed in the matter of hours. A fire that started in Logan County just before noon March 6 spread over 26 miles into Phillips County and changed lives of many forever.
Almost immediately, community members came together to rally for those who would need support in the coming days, weeks and months.
Those efforts, thanks to gifts and donations from thousands of miles away, netted over $265,000 for those affected by the Logan/Phillips County Fire in the chamber of commerce-established general fund at the Haxtun Community Federal Credit Union.
Recently, the Haxtun Fire Relief Advisory Board divided funds, and monetary support checks were sent to 40 applicants who applied for help.
The average check, according to information from the advisory board, totaled about $6,600.
“We are so proud of our community and the strength of Logan and Phillips counties,” the board said in a statement that accompanied checks sent to victims in mid-May.
