Enterprise wins 3 in national contest

The Holyoke Enterprise earned three awards in the National Newspaper Association 2018 Better Newspaper Contest and Better Newspaper Advertising Contest.
Winning first place was the Enterprise’s entry in the best sports section/page for daily and non-daily newspapers with circulations less than 3,000. Contributing writers and photographers were Darci Tomky, Jes-c French, Brenda Brandt, Karen Ortner and Kelley Sullivan.
“Outstanding sports coverage,” said the judge. “Features, action stories, all sports — great photos, layout. A lot of sports in those pages! Great job!”
The Enterprise earned second place for the School Bus Safety page by Tomky and Brandt. It competed in the best multiple advertiser section for daily and non-daily newspapers with circulations less than 5,000. “Overall concept of the bus really added to the overall appeal of the piece,” said the judge.
French was awarded third for “Responding to far-off acts of racism from rural Colorado” in the best serious column competition for daily and non-daily newspapers with circulations less than 3,000.
“A different approach to a timely topic of great national interest and concern,” said the judge. “The writer makes her point in a compelling but non-offensive manner. For many, her approach will be thought-provoking rather than anger provocation. Interesting read.”
