Family, friends, volunteers recognize AWANA accomplishments

The 2016-17 year of AWANA club concluded last Wednesday, April 26, with an award program to recognize clubbers’ achievements. Friends and family were invited to Holyoke First Baptist Church to hear songs the students have learned with Laura Beth Schroetlin, congratulate them on awards they’ve earned, hear a Bible story from Darrell Tomky and enjoy refreshments with one another.

Under the direction of commander Mac Macaulay, students pre-K through sixth-grade meet Wednesday nights from October through April each year for the nondenominational children’s ministry.

At the award program, Macaulay recognized the numerous volunteers who make AWANA possible by leading music, Biblical teaching and games, as well as helping students learn scripture, keeping records and providing birthday treats.

Each week, clubbers recite Bible verses they’ve memorized. Each mastered verse puts a clubber one step closer to completing a book, earning an award and moving on to the next book of challenges in the program. Last Wednesday’s award night recognized books completed.

Students in grades 3-6 are part of the Truth & Training group, led by Phil and Susie Vasa. Caiden Krueger and Caden Sporhase received the Challenger Award for completing the third T&T book. Cooper Goldenstein earned the Excellence Award for finishing his second book, and Mason Powell received the Alpha Award for completing the first book.

Sparks are those participants in kindergarten through second grade, led by Kim Kingman. Kaden Herman and Rorey Schneller received plaques for completing their third Sparks book. Emy Goldenstein, Kinley Sporhase, Mylee Dirks, Reese Steggs, John Krieger, Kaden Herman and Riley Powell each received a second book ribbon.
