Fit, active, healthy:

Why staying physically active as you age is vital to health

An aging body can often make older adults feel as though they are not capable of tasks they once could perform when they were younger. Those feelings, however, can be combatted with regular daily physical activity.

Staying physically active, even in small bouts each day, can improve one’s quality of life as the natural aging process progresses.

Melissa Johnson, an occupational therapist at Perkins County Health Services, says exercise can improve one’s performance of regular, day-to-day activities.

Regular exercise can improve and maintain strength and ability, which allows us the ability to perform desired tasks.

“Exercise increases balance, minimizes falls and allows for better independent living,” Johnson said.

She also noted the mental aspect of regular movement can improve one’s quality of life. Exercise releases endorphins, which makes the body and mind feel good in general and can give a person the desire to do other activities.

Johnson noted Westview in Grant has a 30-minute exercise program in the mornings Monday through Friday. One of the employees leads the group, and the residents are free to join in.

“Group exercise provides social interaction, which is also beneficial,” said Johnson.

In an article from seniors.com titled “Exercising When You’re Over 50: Best Practices and Routines,” it is noted that regular exercise has been linked to a reduced risk or delayed development of many illnesses and injuries, as well as benefitting those with chronic conditions.

These illnesses and chronic conditions include heart disease, strokes, joint and muscle pain, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, lung cancer, colon cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, high blood pressure, breast cancer and cholesterol issues.
