Focus of Feb. 21 diabetes webinar is exercise as medicine
Mark the calendar for the first in a series of diabetes-related webinars to be broadcast in numerous locations across northeast Colorado this year. The webinars will address a variety of topics directly from professionals in the field.
Phillips County’s viewing of the first webinar will be Wednesday, Feb. 21, from noon-1 p.m. in the Ortner Room at the Event Center. It will be presented by Barry Braun, Ph.D., professor and head of the department of health and exercise science at Colorado State University.
Braun will be discussing the role of exercise as medicine to prevent and manage Type 2 diabetes. He will address optimum dosage of exercise to obtain beneficial effects and the interactions between exercise, diet and medications.
Braun’s research program at CSU is focused on optimizing the use of exercise to prevent and/or manage Type 2 diabetes, the role of exercise in preventing recurrence of breast cancer, and the impact of activity and inactivity on hormonal regulation of appetite.
His work is funded by governmental and private sources including the National Institutes of Health, the American Diabetes Association and the Rays of Hope Foundation. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed research articles in journals such as the American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Journal of Applied Physiology.
