Friends of the Library hosts annual salad luncheon
Both official and unofficial friends of the Heginbotham Library gathered at the Phillips County Museum on Feb. 12 for the annual salad luncheon. Twenty-six individuals, mostly members of Friends of the Library, were in attendance for the event themed “reading from the heart.”
Guest speaker Jes-c French spoke about books’ power to transport readers to other people’s shoes. Seeking out both authors and characters that differ from oneself can be an exercise in empathy. Reading books that feature people of different religions, races or abilities can serve as a reminder of the vast world and people’s varied life experiences. Compassion is something that comes more easily with practice, French pointed out, and seeing other points of view in books — even fiction — can promote empathy in real-life scenarios, too.
