Gun club hosting benefit for Fiscus

Holyoke Gun Club members are hosting a benefit for Gary Fiscus, who was involved in a serious work-related accident 10 weeks ago.

A soup supper, turkey shoot and silent auction are on the agenda for Saturday, Nov. 14, at 4 p.m. at Holyoke Gun Club.

All proceeds will go directly to Fiscus with the hope that it will help with expenses related to his recovery.

More information on the fundraiser can be obtained by contacting Aaron Schlachter at 970-580-4458 or Stacy Rueter at 970-520-7758.

Fiscus, owner of Northeast Irrigation Services, fell off a center pivot sprinkler tower at a job in Yuma County on Aug. 26.

He hit one of the sprinkler tires, noting he was fortunate that he didn’t hit his head. He was extremely grateful for those who assisted in getting him out of the way so he wouldn’t get hit by the tower.

The accident resulted in two broken ribs, three cracked ribs and a couple of cracked vertebrae, along with blood in his chest cavity. He said a lung separated from his ribs.

He was flown to a hospital in Aurora, where he spent the next 12 days in intensive care. Following a total of two weeks hospitalization in Aurora, Fiscus returned to Holyoke for two weeks.

Unfortunately, an infection developed, and he returned to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland for another 16 days, with an initial start in the ICU again.

Fiscus said Monday that he’s still on medication for the infection, but he thinks it’s cleared up.

“I’m progressing pretty well, getting around pretty well, and the pain is tolerable,” Fiscus added.

He’s been able to get around at home without a walker for a couple of weeks.

Fiscus’ wife, Jody, was in her final days of operating The Oak Tree in Holyoke in preparation for closing the store in late August. Plans changed quickly as she prioritized being with Gary at the hospital.

Gary said at this time, he is unable to handle any physical day-to-day work in his business.

He said they are grateful to live in a community like this where the gun club personnel and other community members are showing such support by hosting this benefit. “We really appreciate it,” he added.
