Hang gliders eye Holyoke for first-time transnational flight
Locals who keep their eyes on the skies next month could be rewarded by witnessing part of a Texas team’s effort to hang glide in segments from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border.
X Path: Gulf of Mexico to Canada — based out of Corpus Christi, Texas — reached out to city officials in late May and identified Holyoke Municipal Airport as a potential stop on their 1,500-mile northward journey.
Larry Bunner, who is coordinating the effort, said Holyoke is one of 81 airports chosen because of its location in a flight path that stretches from Texas through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.
Besides tackling a never-before-attempted route, Bunner said he and fellow pilots Robin Hamilton and Glen Volk are looking forward to meeting with interested locals wherever they set down.
“This is kind of a bucket list item for us, but it’s also a chance for us to give back by sharing what we do with people all along the way,” he said.
