Health fair to include blood work, vendors

Health screenings and tests, as well as medical info, will be available to the community at Melissa Memorial Hospital’s annual health fair Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m.-noon.
Free balance assessments and blood pressure, height, weight and BMI checks, along with discounted blood draws and flu shots will be offered through MMH.
Visitors who had their blood drawn during the week of Oct. 8 will have a chance to review the results at the fair.
MMH public affairs specialist Elizabeth Hutches said the hospital wants the fair to be an opportunity for outreach as well as education, with vendor appearances from international, state and local groups.
“Our goal is to bring in these healthcare-related vendors to share their services with the community,” Hutches said. “We’re really trying to make the community healthier.”
In addition to representatives from various hospital departments, organizations slated to appear at the fair include the Medical Air Services Association, Northeast Colorado Health Department, Colorado Christian University, AirLife, Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance and MMH Foundation.
Holyoke Lions Club will also be accepting old eyeglasses and hearing aids for donation, and Colorado State University Extension will offer a nutrition presentation at 10 a.m. and a series of diabetes webinars.
The following webinars will be offered at the fair:
    — Weight Management for Prevention and Treatment of Diabetes by Dr. Colby Jolley, 9-9:45 a.m.
    — Exercise Prevention and Management of Type 2 Diabetes by Barry Braun, Ph.D., CSU, 10-10:45 a.m.
    — Neuropathy and Foot Care for Diabetes by Dr. Thomas Hecker, 11-11:45 a.m.
Blood drawn at the fair will be subjected to A1C, CBC, vitamin D and thyroid tests. Appointments may be made through the clinic to review blood test results with MMH providers.
Those interested in applying for financial assistance for the blood draw can review the requirements and find a copy of the application on the hospital’s Facebook page. For a hard copy, contact financial counselor Sharon Bernard at 970-854-2241. All applications are due Friday, Oct. 19, by 4:30 p.m.
