As is tradition, Holyoke Elementary students were the lucky recipients of pumpkins at the end of the school day Oct. 21. For kindergartners like Linkoln Baker, who proudly hoists his pumpkin into the air for all to see, the custom is still especially new and exciting. This year’s pumpkins, which were grown at Pumpkins and More A-maiz-ing Farm, were sponsored by Holyoke Community Federal Credit Union, First Pioneer National Bank, CHS Grainland, PC Telcom, Bank of the West and Bank of Colorado. — The Holyoke Enterprise | Johnson Publications

Holyoke livens up for Halloween

The week of Halloween is promising to be a spooktacular time for all ages in the Holyoke area.

Thursday, Oct. 31, Holyoke Lions Club is hosting its 68th annual Halloween costume parade at 5:30 p.m. at Holyoke High School’s old gym. Participants include kids from birth through fifth grade. Prizes will be awarded for each age group, and all participants will receive a bag of candy and a 50-cent piece.

Earlier that day, kids are invited to Melissa Memorial Hospital’s third annual Trunk or Treat event from 3:45-5:30 p.m. in the MMH parking lot. Community members who want to decorate a vehicle and hand out candy can reserve a spot with Elizabeth Hutches at 970-854-2241.

Also on Thursday, First Christian Church in Holyoke is sponsoring a fall carnival from 6-8 p.m. at the church. The evening will include fun for all ages — games, prizes, candy and a chili meal.

Wednesday, Oct. 30, is Youth Challenge’s annual Mission: Possible event for grades 7-12 at Camp Machasay, 61360 County Road 40, Amherst. Dinner begins at 6 p.m. with the outdoor game at 7 p.m.

This weekend, Oct. 25-27, is your last chance to check out Pumpkins and More A-maiz-ing Farm, located 6 miles south and 3 1/2 miles east of Holyoke on County Road 10. Hours for the pumpkin patch and other attractions are 4-9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday and noon-6 p.m. on Sunday. Unfortunately, recent windy weather took its toll on the haunted corn maize, and it had to be canceled for the rest of the season.

Monday, Oct. 28, Holyoke Marketplace is hosting a book reading, book signing and treats with Jennifer Hughes, author of “All Hallow’s Eve,” at 4 p.m. Copies of her book will also be given away as prizes for a coloring contest. Kids up to sixth grade should pick up the coloring page at Holyoke Marketplace and return it by Monday at 4 p.m.
