Hymn sing promotes community

Community members are invited to a nondenominational old-fashioned hymn sing Sunday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church at 1000 E. Johnson St. in Holyoke.

The community event is organized by Caryl and Charlie Harvey and Julie and Ivan Wiebke.

Caryl recalls watching the gospel quartet Greater Vision in a hymn sing on YouTube with her husband Charlie and thinking, “Wouldn’t that be wonderful if we did that in Holyoke?”  

At the event, people will sing directly out of hymnals. Caryl said people have grown up with the old hymns, which remind many of good memories.

“The hymns are very precious to a lot of people,” she said. “They bring back a lot of cherished memories that are important to people.”
