Initial appearance scheduled after weekend shooting

Holyoke Police Department and Phillips County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting Saturday, July 8, at 640 S. Baxter Ave., after a 4:38 p.m. 911 call to the Phillips County Communications Center. According to HPD, Garrett Stephenson, age 33, later died from a gunshot wound to the chest at Melissa Memorial Hospital. Jon McMartin, age 33, was arrested, and preliminary charges include felony menacing and murder in the second degree. He is being held in the Logan County Detention Center in Sterling, and an initial appearance is scheduled for 4 p.m. today, July 10, in district court in Sterling.
