Investigation ongoing for body found in NE Phillips County
The body of a white male between the ages of 50-60 was found on a rural abandoned farmstead near county roads 57 and 40 in northeast Phillips County Saturday, June 13.
The road intersection is 2 miles south of the Sedgwick County line and 4 miles west of the Nebraska state line.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a body with a gun in an abandoned building. They suspect it had been there since the second week of February, according to Sheriff Thom Elliott.
A photographer from nearby Venango, Nebraska, who was taking photos in the remote rural area, discovered the body.
While it appears that the male died from a gunshot wound to the head, the body had no identification and no vehicle was found near the location, according to a June 29 press release from the sheriff’s office.
A canvass of surrounding counties has been conducted, but it resulted in no missing person reports.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation was contacted for crime scene assistance. The investigation is ongoing until the person is identified, family members are contacted and reasons for the fatality are determined.
Additionally, a forensic autopsy has been performed, and results are pending.
