Kids get hooked on theater in ‘Booked’ production

Elementary students took center stage in “Booked,” a Children’s Theatre Workshop play hosted by the Phillips County Players Sunday, June 25.

Four escaped orphans, Anna (Adison Goldenstein), Margie (Kya Thacker), Charley (Isaiah Rueter) and Polly (Gianna Swan), take refuge in a library for a night, and soon discover the magic of books. As they choose stories to read, characters played by Grace Whisenhunt, Kinley Sporhase, Vianey Jimenez and Karen Swan come to life, teaching important life lessons.

“It went very well,” said director Karen Swan. With only seven students to fill 14 parts, Whisenhunt, Sporhase and Jimenez took on multiple roles to make the production possible. “They took ownership and even added lines in places. They really made it theirs.”

Karen Swan said that as part of the annual summer children’s workshop, students helped with the sets, backstage and everything else involved in a theatre production. “We’re already looking forward to next June,” she said.

In addition, the production also helped five of the seven young actors audition for the next PCP play, “Baker Street Irregulars” coming Aug. 11-13.
