A little party never killed nobody

CineMagic’s 1920s-themed murder mystery raises over $31,000

The Roaring ’20s provided a roaring good time for attendees at the 10th annual CineMagic event Saturday, Dec. 11.

The fundraiser for Golden Plains Recreation Center/Peerless Theatre raised a total of $31,406.50.

Since it was the 10th annual event, organizer Tricia Michael said it was held at the Phillips County Event Center, which holds more people than the Peerless, where it has traditionally been held. She said there were approximately 175 people in attendance.

Ticket sales and cash donations brought in a little over $32,000, including a $10,000 matching donation from the Heginbotham Trust. A live auction and silent auction combined for close to $10,000.

Attendees were encouraged to dress in 1920s attire, which provided the perfect setting for an interactive play called “Murder Mystery at the Theater,” performed by the Phillips County Players.

A meal was catered by Happy Jacks Barbeque and was served by Holyoke FCCLA members.

The evening concluded with a dance and card games, which were led by Club 25 members. Those who were lucky enough to win kept 80%, and GPRC/Peerless split the remaining 20% of the money with Amherst Volunteer Fire Department for the use of its card tables.

The beautifully decorated event center had a unique car on display. A 1926 Model T was on loan from Cash Nab, a senior at Haxtun High School.

Nab’s great-great-grandfather bought the car brand new, and unlike other cars of that era, this one is a dark green color because he didn’t like black. He asked some Fleming students to paint it, which may be why it ended up Wildcat green. Nab also had vintage record players on display Saturday evening.

CineMagic is the single largest activity to augment the revenues of GPRC. While the cinema and concessions prove to be fiscally stable, the facility as a whole requires additional support. One item in particular on the facility’s wish list is an upgrade to the speakers in the theater.
