Local July 4th activities scheduled

June 30 races slated for additional fun

Support from the community and the City of Holyoke guarantee a dazzling night of fireworks presented by the Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department this Fourth of July.
Many will be gathered at the City Park Tuesday at dusk, but volunteer firefighter Lance Murray noted that great views  can be found along Johnson Street, all the way from the airport to Interocean Avenue, as well as on Interocean to the south edge of town. Fireworks will be set off near First Baptist Church at 1000 E. Johnson St.
Collection containers, decorated like firecrackers, are located in businesses around town for individuals to make contributions for next year’s Independence Day show. They will remain out for one week following the Fourth of July.
Also in Holyoke Tuesday night will be races at Phillips County Raceway beginning at 6 p.m., with pits opening at 3 p.m. Modifieds, sport mods, stock cars, hobby stocks and compacts will be featured at the midseason championship.
Raceway promoter Joe Bellm encourages raceway fans to take advantage of the local fireworks show at the end of the night.
Holyoke Police Department reminds citizens of a good rule of thumb for whether a firework is legal in Holyoke: If it explodes or leaves the ground, it is illegal. For questions about the legality of fireworks, contact HPD at 970-854-2342.

    Don’t forget June 30 activities
Preceding the Independence Day celebration, weekend action is scheduled at Phillips County Raceway Friday, June 30, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Pits open at 4:30 p.m.
Cars from the Rocky Mountain Midget Racing Association will be the special guests at the Friday races. Over 20 cars will be traveling with RMMRA. The Holyoke event is the first in their doubleheader this weekend; Saturday, July 1, they will be racing at I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan. Going into the weekend, Keith Rauch leads the RMMRA with 290 points.
Also on the PCR lineup are modifieds, sport mods, stock cars, hobby stocks and compacts, for their fourth Holyoke appearance of the season.
After three Phillips County races, local points are close among the leading racers. The top four modifieds are within five points, with A.J. Valim leading with 104. Ryan Moser has a 10-point lead in the sport mods division, sitting at 113 points. Stock car drivers Kyle Clough and Michael Brunswig are tied at 109. Tanner Clough has a 12-point lead in the hobby stocks with 107 points. Sports compacts are led by Shalanda Smith, who has 103 points.
