Handmade knitted knockers samples showcase the handiwork of local women looking to supply the special breast prostheses. — The Holyoke Enterprise | Johnson Publications

Local Knitted Knockers group forming for a purpose

Knitted knockers are special handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.

Inspired by the video by the founder on knittedknockers.org, Holyoke area women are joining the cause in making these wonderful alternatives to breast prosthetics.

A meeting to learn about the program was held at Cretive Traditions in Holyoke Oct. 11, and owner Julie Haake said they will be meeting again Thursday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.

Knitted knockers can either be knitted or crocheted. Specific patterns for all sizes can be found on the group’s website, along with details on the types of yarn to use.

Locally, Laura Krogmeier will be leading the knitters and Suzan Hatteberg, the crocheters. Haake will carry the Fair Isle Harbor yarn at a special rate for this project. The yarn will not be displayed for retail sale, so those interested will need to ask for it specifically.

In Colorado, there are 12 other contributing groups or individuals listed on the Knitted Knockers website, who are supplying these handmade items. Haake is excited to expand this service to Holyoke and northeast Colorado.
