McGuire named chief judge of 13th Judicial District

Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Brian D. Boatright has appointed the Honorable Carl S. McGuire III to serve as chief judge of the 13th Judicial District (Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties).

He replaces Chief Judge Michael K. Singer, who was appointed to the District Court in 2003 and served as chief judge from 2009 to date. McGuire’s appointment is effective July 20, the date upon which Singer’s resignation as chief judge is effective.

“Chief Judge Singer is to be commended for his contributions as chief judge of the 13th Judicial District,” Boatright said. “I am pleased to appoint Judge McGuire to this important role. I am confident he has the characteristics necessary to be a successful leader and I look forward to working with him.”

McGuire was appointed a district court judge for the 13th Judicial District in May 2016. He previously served as district court magistrate from 2013-16 and a Washington County court judge from 2004-16.

In April 2012, McGuire returned from a 10-month deployment in Afghanistan. Prior to taking the bench in 2004, he was a judge advocate in the Navy Reserve. McGuire studied agricultural economics at Colorado State University and received his law degree from the University of Wyoming College of Law.
