Meakins attends Boys State

Haxtun’s Elijah Meakins attended the 2018 Colorado Boys State at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs from June 9-15.
The week-long program is run by the Colorado American Legion each year. About 200 high school juniors graduate from Boys State after the program is finished. During that week, they set up their own government and participate in elections and sessions. Meakins was selected by the Holyoke American Legion to attend Boys State this year.
At Boys State, the students were split up into cities and counties named after veterans of the Vietnam War. Meakins was a part of the City of Simpson, which was in McVay County. Each city had several elected officials including a mayor, treasurer and a city council. Meakins was elected to the city council.
The city council passed ordinances and resolutions for the city’s needs. The county also had elected officials, such as commissioners and a sheriff, but Meakins was not elected for any of those positions. Every day the cities and counties were given problems to resolve, and they had to find ways to fix them.
