Meakins places in state VFW art contest

Haxtun student Erika Meakins placed eighth in the Department of Colorado’s National American Creative Patriotic Art Scholarship Contest, an annual promotion by Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliaries countrywide for grades 9-12.

Meakins is the daughter of Steven and Heather Meakins of Haxtun. Her painting was a project in her art class with teacher Sara E. Martinez.

Meakins’ entry was inspired by stories told by her great-grandfather who served in Korea, and a family friend who has talked about his time in the service of the country.
