Mental health matters in college

Making the transition from a high school senior to college freshman is a big leap, for both parents and students. This life change is difficult for students because they see their family and support system less and are less familiar with resources available to them. It is not uncommon for college students to experience situational depression during this time. The college age is also when a large majority of mental illnesses manifest, meaning new signs and symptoms will emerge.
The “It’s Real: College Students and Mental Health” program has two goals: educate about mental health and inform students of resources on campus. This program educates students through the use of other student stories and experiences with mental illness and uses a representative from the campus so the student can associate the information they are learning with a face and a human resource.
