Movie, races and a benefit to precede July 4 fireworks

The real Independence Day magic begins after sunset when the fireworks show begins, but several organizations have special activities planned to commemorate the holiday earlier in the day as well.
Both the Peerless Theatre and First Baptist Church are hosting events that will benefit Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department. Not only do the firefighters protect lives and property in the area year-round, they are also responsible for the annual fireworks show.
On July 4 at 4 p.m., the Peerless will have a special showing of “Men in Black: International.” From that viewing, $1 of each ticket sold will be donated to HVFD.
From 5-8 p.m. that evening, the Baptist church will host its benefit for the fire department. Located at 1000 E. Johnson St., there will be food, fun, games and a bounce house. A fire truck, police cars and helicopter will be on-site as well. Freewill donations will be taken for HVFD.
Also slated to start at 5 p.m. are the evening races at Phillips County Raceway. Divisions featured at the Independence Day Blowout include lightning sprints, hobby stocks, stock cars, sport mods, compacts and mods. Returning to PCR for rides will be monster truck Veteran.
Attendees at all of the 4th of July activities are encouraged to finish out the evening with the Holyoke fireworks show. Once it’s dark — around 9 p.m. — HVFD will set off the fireworks southeast of town, between the airport and the cemetery.
In the days leading up to July 4, residents may notice donation canisters in local businesses around town. Donations will be used by HVFD to put on next year’s fireworks show.
