New community garden in beginning stages in Holyoke

Colorado State University Extension is starting to implement a new community garden in Holyoke. The garden will offer an opportunity for people who want a small area to grow their own fresh food or flowers.

First off, organizers are working on finding a location for the community garden.  Based on the location and size of the area, this will determine how many people and how many plots will be available.

If a location can’t be found, another option is to build or purchase materials for raised beds. Organizers have permission to place the raised beds at the Phillips County Fairgrounds. This will provide less space than an area of ground but would be helpful for people who have back issues or knee issues.

CSU Extension agent Deeona Johnston is hoping to teach some food preservation classes as an educational opportunity for community garden members and the public.

Additionally, CSU Extension horticulture agent Linda Langelo is looking to provide some educational training for how to grow the crops or flowers that individuals select for their garden space.

Extension is also excited because gardens can improve economic opportunities by training volunteers and selling food at farmers’ markets. Agriculture can also teach residents useful skills in planning, food production and business.

Anyone who might be interested in participating in the community garden should contact Johnston or Langelo at the Phillips County Extension Office by calling 970-854-3616. Those who are on Facebook may contact Langelo on the Garden the Plains page by sending a private message.
