Julesburg votes ‘no’ on pot

JULESBURG ADVOCATE, Sept. 6 — After two municipal elections and a county vote, Julesburg has once again voted “no” to marijuana sales in Julesburg.

In Tuesday’s special election, voters cast 258 ballots against to 169 votes in favor of allowing medical and recreational marijuana sales within the town limits.

Proponents of the ordinance suggested that passage would increase sales tax revenues and legitimize the fact that marijuana is already in the community and allow the town to control it.

Helicopter seeds 2,000 acres of cover crops in Perkins County

GRANT TRIBUNE-SENTINEL, Sept. 4 — Hexagon Helicopters of Elkhorn, Nebraska, was in Perkins County, Nebraska, last week seeding cover crops.

Brent Wulf, owner and chief pilot of Hexagon, said they seeded cereal rye as well as some radishes over 2,000 acres of standing corn in southeast Perkins County. Most of the corn had been destroyed by hail.

A spreader bucket is carried beneath the helicopter to spread the seed. Wulf said they custom-built the bucket and now have a patent for the design. It can carry as much as 400 pounds of seed.

Military convoy travels through Deuel County

CHAPPELL REGISTER, Sept. 5 — Local residents got the chance to witness the biggest military convoy in a century pass through the area last Thursday when the classic and modern military vehicles traveled through Deuel County, Nebraska, as part of the retractment of the historic transcontinental trip.

The 100th anniversary convoy, which began in Washington, D.C., Aug. 11 and is planned to arrive in San Francisco, California, Sept. 14, is a retracing of a trip spearheaded by the U.S. Army in 1919 that followed the Lincoln Highway from the East to West coasts.

The 37-stop journey stretched through 11 states and approximately 3,200 miles. The convoy has military vehicles from the World War I era to current models.

Caliche students enjoy newly renovated gym

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 6 — After nearly two years of hard work and tons of community support, students at Caliche High School are now enjoying a newly renovated gym. The project cost approximately $550,000.
