Locals unite on new wind farm

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Dec. 4 — Fleming area residents want to present a united front when dealing with NextEra Energy concerning a planned wind farm to go in west and south of the town.

According to information presented at a “town hall” meeting at Fleming School Monday night, the company intends to install 80 wind turbines in an area of about 150 square miles west, southwest and south of Fleming. There already are 42 turbines turning in a Western Area Power Authority wind farm north of Fleming. Those were installed in 2012.

A little more than half of the three dozen people who attended the meeting indicated they are absolutely opposed to the new wind farm while the rest indicated they are either in favor or undecided about it.

Questions asked at the meeting fell into two categories: property rights and environmental concerns.

New building site proposed for Julesburg schools

JULESBURG ADVOCATE, Dec. 6 — Moving ahead with plans to build a new pre-kindergarten-12th grade campus, the Julesburg School Board discussed possible site locations at a meeting Nov. 20.

Initial locations included the acquisition of property at the north edge of Julesburg, and there were also talks of a possible swap of the current town pool area for the school campuses with the Town of Julesburg. Discussions included the proximity to the existing football field.

Julesburg Town manager Cameron Britton attended the meeting to give input. He told the board the location north of town would require a lift station at the school’s expense and the electrical utilities would be serviced by Highline Electric and not Julesburg. Britton told the board that the district would then lose their backup power.
