CARD facility getting closer to reality here

YUMA PIONEER, March 26 — An autism treatment center is going to eventually open in Yuma, based on what the Armstrong family reported to the Yuma City Council during its regular meeting last week.

Jeremy Armstrong, whose son has autism, along with his parents Ron and Sue, updated the council.

Jeremy explained that his son Mitch was diagnosed with severe autism. It was recommended Mitch receive therapy 40 hours per week. He said his family — wife Megan and their sons — had to move to Fort Collins so Mitch could attend the CARD center. Jeremy told the council that Mitch has made great progress ever since.

The family wanted to reunite in Yuma, though, so they have been looking at starting a CARD facility here for the past several months. Jeremy said 78 people in the area have signed up, and CARD has been convinced to open a facility here.

Straubs arrested in vehicle thefts

WAUNETA BREEZE, March 26 — Things may be shutting down in this area due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the Chase County (Nebraska) Sheriff’s Office had a busy weekend. Deputies arrested two area brothers on consecutive days in separate incidents.

According to media releases from the sheriff’s office, Chase County deputies attempted to stop a 2004 Chevrolet pickup at 8:31 p.m. Friday after the vehicle was reported stolen from Trenton, Nebraska, early that morning. Deputies tried to pull the pickup over near mile marker 40 on Highway 6, but it did not stop, and the driver fled westbound on Highway 6.

The driver turned south on 341st Avenue, leading deputies on a one-hour pursuit across county and field roads in Chase, Dundy and Hitchcock counties in Nebraska. He drove south of 722nd Road just east of 349th Avenue into a wheat stubble field, continuing southbound until becoming stuck in mud.

By the time deputies got to the vehicle, the driver had fled on foot. Deputies from Chase, Dundy, Hitchcock and Hayes counties searched the area and found Seth J. Straub, 21, of Wauneta, Nebraska, at 11:28 p.m. in the stubble field.
