Solidarity event goes off peacefully

YUMA PIONEER, June 4 — Approximately 60 people participated in a peaceful, silent vigil showing solidarity for lives of all colors late Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Park in Yuma, in the wake of the death of George Floyd, whose neck was knelt on by a police officer for eight minutes in Minneapolis.

Jamie Fiorino, the pastor of Yuma’s First Presbyterian Church, had put out the word on Facebook that she was going to hold the event. The Pioneer shared her post, and the whole thing took on a life of its own — though in the end it was much ado about nothing.

“First and foremost I’m a Christian, obviously, and I believe that we are called to protect the vulnerable and the innocent and speak out against injustice,” she said during an interview at the rally. “I am an American, and it is my right to gather and to speak as I want to, and I am a citizen of Yuma. I love Yuma, and I think we have some brokeness both in our national system and here in our community that I think needs to be addressed. ... This is a moment not about one particular person but just to say that people of color in our lives matter, and their voices need to be heard.”

The voices of Facebook definitely were heard leading up to the event, leading to a tense moment in the community that ended up being unfounded.

Comments on the post about the solidarity gathering quickly began referring to the possibility of outside protesters showing up in Yuma. It continued to build to the point where it basically was stated as fact that agitators from bigger cities, including Chicago, were headed to Yuma, though there was never a credible source associated with the posts.

New shop opening later this year

GRANT TRIBUNE-SENTINEL, June 3 — Brick & Mortar, owned by Adair and Jason Reese, will be opening in downtown Grant sometime around November 2020.

The Reese family, who also own Reese Mechanical, purchased the building around two and a half years ago, and because Windesigns relocated, Adair did not want to see an empty building on main street. She and Jason made the decision to open up a retail shop in the open space.

Brick & Mortar will sell men’s and women’s clothing, along with other small gift items sourced from small businesses, such as those owned by people she has met through Mrs. America events.
