HHS moves to remote learning following 3 positive cases

HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, Sept. 9 — A phone call to parents from Superintendent Darcy Garretson on Labor Day announced that all Haxtun High School students would be on remote learning until Sept. 16. The call said there have been three positive COVID-19 cases within the high school.

As part of the investigation by public health, each person diagnosed was being kept home from school until they are no longer infectious, the person’s activities when they could have spread COVID-19 were assessed, and those who were close contacts of those infected were instructed to stay home from school for 14 days after the exposure.

NJC’s Adam Zink sets world record for powerlifting

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 12 — The world has been rough for Colorado sports fans recently. This past weekend, however, Colorado sports got a huge win that will be heard all around the state. In fact, it’s already being heard all around the world.

Adam Zink, a sophomore at Northeastern Junior College and native of Iliff, broke the world record for bench press for 18-19-year-olds in the 220 pounds category by benching 358.2 pounds last weekend at the Drug Tested National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

Polis doubles down on appointment of activist Ellen Kessler to vet board

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 12 — Colorado Gov. Jared Polis stands by his appointment of a self-professed critic of the livestock industry to the state’s veterinary board, despite a formal demand that he do so.

Polis was in Sterling on Friday and, during a brief conversation with reporters, reaffirmed his commitment to diversity among his appointments to state boards, commissions and committees.

Westbound traffic on I-80 backed up Monday afternoon

CHAPPELL REGISTER, Sept. 10 — On Monday afternoon, traffic was at a near standstill on Interstate 80 from Big Springs, Nebraska, to the Colorado I-76 junction west of Big Springs. The high volume of vehicles was blamed on the number of out-of-state vehicles leaving Lake McConaughy at the end of the Labor Day weekend.
