Northeastern 18 gets new ownership, new name

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 18 — The fifth-oldest golf course in Colorado is getting a new name. Sterling Golf LLC has acquired Northeastern 18 from the previous ownership group. The course, founded in 1916 as Sterling Country Club, will be renamed Sky Ranch Golf Course as part of a rebranding effort.

6-man Colorado Rural Football League launches

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 16 — Four communities in rural Colorado decided to take it upon themselves to ensure that one way or another, there will be football played in the fall in some capacity.

The communities of Peetz, Raymer, Walden and Briggsdale have come together to form the Colorado Rural Football League. The league, which is community organized and not officially school related, will be comprised of four 6-man football teams and will each play four regular season games. The first game is set for Thursday, Sept. 17, hosted by the Peetz Pack against the Raymer Renegades.

Land use plan for NISP water project gets nod

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 10 — Larimer County’s Board of County Commissioners voted 2-1 last week to approve a 1041 permit for the Northern Integrated Supply Project near Fort Collins.

NISP will provide about 40,000 acre-feet of new, reliable water supply.

Recent Aurora water purchases signal return of ‘buy and dry’ trend

STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 11 — The recent sale of water from two ditch companies in the South Platte Basin has again raised the specter of irrigated farmland being dried up to provide water for the metropolitan Front Range.

Most worrisome for those along the lower South Platte is the recent sale of 97% of the Tetsel Ditch Company near Merino to the City of Aurora. Officials there confirmed that the water sold for $14,000 a share for 1,040 shares of the ditch company. That sale, worth more than $14.5 million, was followed soon after by Aurora’s purchase of the Whitney Ditch near Windsor, which involved 119 shares at over $222,000 per share for a total of $26.5 million.

Man dies, woman injured in boating accident at Lake Mac

GRANT TRIBUNE-SENTINEL, Sept. 9 — A Colorado man died in a boating accident Saturday afternoon at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area.

Kevin Kiesow, 53, of Colorado Springs was taken to Ogallala Community Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead. Kim Campe, 55, also of Colorado Springs was admitted to the hospital and is recovering.
