Hayes will teach 7-12 vocal music classes
    IMPERIAL REPUBLICAN, June 15 — After a second month of lengthy discussion, Superintendent Joey Lefdal said Randy Hayes will teach high school choir and high school show choir next year, as he did the past years.
    At the May meeting, the superintendent said he was not altering his decision to assign 9-12 band and vocal groups to Hayes, but the board was pressed by Hayes this week for a direction and whether they would reverse Lefdal’s decision “or just say yes.”

Riding a trail of history
    JULESBURG ADVOCATE, June 15 — The mail was running an hour late when riders from the Colorado Division of the Pony Express exchanged the leather mochila filled with commemorative letters and personal mail Thursday morning, June 8.
    As the Colorado riders began their run, the moon lit the trail from Big Springs, Nebraska, County Road 6, following the South Platte River.
    It was daybreak when Colorado’s division president Linda Dolezal picked up the mochila on County Road 28 and crossed Highway 385 and headed past the Colorado Welcome Center. The mail continued through the northeast corner of Colorado as the mail pouch was exchanged between horses and riders and into Chappell, Nebraska.

Open for business; Holiday Inn Express welcoming guests
    STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, June 14 — The new Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Sterling is “open and ready for business,” Jeff Macko, vice president of operations, said Tuesday afternoon.
    The hotel, located on Highway 6 just west of Riverview Road, already had reservations booked for this weekend.

HHD Board hires contractors for construction project
    HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, June 14 — After two special gatherings featuring presentations on the design-build concept from interested firms and a regular meeting, the Haxtun Hospital District Board of Directors has voted to hire Alliance Construction/Davis Partnership Architects for the construction of an addition on the east end of the current hospital.
    HHD administrators and board members began talks of an addition almost a year ago when the Erdman Group presented market analysis and planning information during a July 2016 meeting.

Grant allows for retention of fire sirens
    AKRON NEWS-REPORTER, June 14 — Thanks to a USDA grant received by the Town of Akron, fire and tornado sirens will remain a vital form of communication within the town.
    Up until now, maintenance costs of the sirens have come from the Akron Volunteer Fire Department’s budget. Though members of the fire department see the importance of the sirens, the cost was becoming too much of an issue for their budget.
