Michael to be honored at 100th Corn Festival in September

HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, Feb. 24 — This will be one for the books.

The last weekend in September brings the time-honored tradition of the Haxtun Corn Festival, and the 2021 event promises to be bigger and better than ever to honor the event’s 100th celebration.

Longtime Haxtun resident and The Country Rose business owner Marilyn Michael has been selected to serve as grand marshal for the Sept. 25 event celebrating the theme “Cheers to 100 years!”

Coach Brown honored at Bob Smith invite

WRAY GAZETTE, Feb. 24 — At the Bob Smith Invitational last Saturday, Wray wrestling head coach Matt Brown was officially honored as the 2020 Class 2A/3A Coach of the Year after guiding the Eagles to their third straight state title last season.

Akron man loses life in avalanche

AKRON NEWS-REPORTER, Feb. 24 — Tragedy struck the Akron community when resident, TJ Carman, age 41, was killed in a large avalanche last Tuesday, Feb. 16.

According to the preliminary report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the accident took place around 3 p.m. near Ruby Mountain, southeast of Rand, in Jackson County.  

The avalanche occurred near tree line on a northeast facing slope at around 11,400 feet, breaking on a weak layer about 3 feet below the surface and stepped down to deeper buried weak layers near the ground in some places. The avalanche spanned approximately three quarters of a mile wide and ran about 400 vertical feet.
