Book outlines great history of Yuma County, region

YUMA PIONEER, April 1 — It turns out Yuma County and the whole region played a fascinating role in the settling of the Old West in the 19th century. “The craziest part, which is almost ironic, is we didn’t learn about this stuff in school,” Matt Vincent said. “The truth is a lot of that stuff happened right here.”

The Yuma native, who lives on a farm with his wife Robin near Hyde between Yuma and Otis, has published a series of fascinating short stories titled “Wild Times & True Tales From The High Plains” focusing on northeast Colorado and the neighboring areas in Kansas and Nebraska.

Perhaps someday it could be incorporated into area schools’ curriculums.

The short stories cover battles and other key moments in the settlement of the Old West, signaling the end of the nomadic Native American tribes that had traversed this region for centuries, plus much more.

That 106-year run is coming to an end, as the Gardners are selling Farmers Implement to Central Plains Equipment, which counts the Case IH stores in Burlington and Holyoke among its locations.

Hairball returning for fair; Granger Smith headlining country concert

IMPERIAL REPUBLICAN, March 10 — When Hairball took the stage at the Chase County Fair two years ago, rain cut their performance short. Their short performance enamored the crowd, and Entertainment Chair Alex McNair said people have been asking for them to come back since. The fair obliged, bringing them back to Imperial, Nebraska, on Friday, Aug. 13.

The fun won’t stop there. McNair said they have another great country concert night planned for Saturday, Aug. 14.

This year’s country headliner will be longtime performer Granger Smith. “Hate You Like I Love You,” “That’s Why I Love Dirt Roads” and “Country Things” are among some of Smith’s favorite songs.
