Commission shoots down Tribe as the new mascot
YUMA PIONEER, Jan. 27 — Tribe is a no-go for the Yuma schools’ new mascot. Yuma School District-1 will be posting a survey online to get public feedback on the remaining options. The top four mascot suggestions from last fall, along with a “No Mascot” option, will be presented on the survey.
It has come to this as Yuma finally received feedback from the Colorado Commission on Indian Affairs during its remote meeting Jan. 12.
The suggestion of going with Tribe to replace Indians did not go well with CCIA members, who said the word is too closely associated with Native Americans. District leaders were told to come up with a plan B.

HCCC now operating as Little Sprouts Learning Center; Scheopner leads as center’s director
HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, Jan. 19 — What was once the Haxtun Community Childcare Center is now operating as Little Sprouts Learning Center. Changes in the child care center’s operational business organization took place at the first of the year and reflect a new beginning for the local center.
Now under the direction of Lindsey Scheopner, Little Sprouts Learning Center has one main objective, and that is to provide a safe and caring environment for the children of Haxtun and surrounding communities.
Scheopner ran her own in-home daycare until recently when she took over as director of the Haxtun child care center.
Scheopner has worked tirelessly and diligently along with Little Sprouts Learning Center board members to not only clean and spruce up the center but also to reestablish proper licensing through the state of Colorado.
Scheopner joined the local child care center in October, and since her addition, the center has undergone a handful of state inspections and passed them all without infractions. Most recently, the center was released off probation with state licensing following disappointing actions from a previous director late last fall.
