Laybourn cleared of charges
YUMA PIONEER, Aug. 31 — A Washington County man will not be charged in the shooting death of his adult son, it was announced late last week.
Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke announced last Friday the he declined to file charges against Stanley Laybourn, 65, of Cope, after it was determined he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed his 31-year-old son, Leyton.
The Weld County D.A.’s Office was appointed as special prosecutor for purposes of this investigation because of the relationship between Stanley Laybourn, the victim and Washington County Commissioner Lea Ann Laybourn.

Semi truck driver sentenced for hitting Aaron’s building
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Aug. 29 — Thirty-two-year-old Travis Jon Ayers of Bushnell, Nebraska, will serve seven years in community corrections after crashing a cattle hauler into the former Aaron’s building.
Ayers was sentenced recently in Logan County District Court for criminal mischief and for driving under the influence in connection with the crash that destroyed the downtown Sterling building, which was undergoing remodeling, the night of Nov. 18, 2016.
Judge Michael Singer recently handed down the sentence after Ayers pled guilty to both charges at a previous hearing.

Rocks provide opportunity to spread kindness in the community
GRANT TRIBUNE-SENTINEL, Aug. 30 — “Grant Rocks!” The play on words is the clever name of the creative mini craze that has swept over the area this summer.
All around the community, one may find painted rocks “hidden” in strategic places to bring inspiration to those who find them.
The project was started locally by Tracey Hajek, but the original idea stems from the “Kindness Rocks Project,” where the goal is to “promote random acts of kindness to unsuspecting recipients whether by painting and dropping inspirational rocks, or some other cool, creative way to bring kindness into the world,” according to the website.
