Haxtun voters asked to approve mill levy override in November
    HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, Sept. 13 — Haxtun voters will be asked to approve a mill levy override for the Haxtun School District during elections this November.
    The Board of Education spent much of the past few months researching, collecting data and hosting community meetings to gain input on the matter. Following feedback from communitywide surveys and with input from task force members, the BOE recently voted to move forward with a ballot measure to ask for a mill levy override of five mills with a 10-year sunset.
    According to information released from the Haxtun School District on the proposed mill levy override, plans are to use the funds to maintain quality schools, keep students and teachers safe and secure, and extend the life of the existing school facilities with focus on teachers, textbooks and technology.

NISP gets crucial state agency OK
    STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 9 — The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission has unanimously approved the Fish and Wildlife Mitigation and Enhancement Plan submitted by the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District for the Northern Integrated Supply Project on the Poudre River northwest of Fort Collins.
    The plan that was approved Thursday addresses the impacts to fish and wildlife due to the development and water diversion associated with NISP. Brian Werner, spokesman for Northern Water, said Friday the approval is a significant advancement of the plan. “This is a big box we can check off, but there are still a few boxes ahead of us.”
    The plan now goes to the Colorado Water Conservation Board, which could give its approval to the project as early as the Sept. 20 board meeting, and then to the governor’s desk for signature.

Highway 6 crash claims life of Sterling man
    STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 14 — An 82-year-old Sterling man died Tuesday after running into the back of a vehicle stopped at a construction zone just east of Sterling on Highway 6.
    According to an accident report from Colorado State Patrol Trooper Joe Barco, Stanley R. Ham was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado westbound approaching the construction zone east of Sterling, where crews are replacing roadway along a four-mile stretch. Ham was behind a 2007 Freightliner dump truck driven by Robert Miller, 67, of Padroni.

Wall tapped for Colorado Tourism Leadership Journey
    BURLINGTON RECORD, Sept. 14 — Nikki Wall, museum director, Old Town Museum, Burlington, has been named a member of the Colorado Tourism Office inaugural class for the Colorado Tourism Leadership Journey, a brand new, year-long executive training program aimed at building the state tourism industry’s bench strength.
    In addition to Wall, the class of 2018 includes 19 other participants from tourism settings as diverse as Expedia, YMCA of the Rockies and the National Park Service.
