Repairs underway for Highway 6
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, March 8 — Three and a half years following the South Platte River flood in September 2013, work is underway to repair damage to Highway 6 on the east side of Sterling.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is beginning improvements to the roadway and bridge this week, with work slated to start in the eastbound lanes. The $8.6 million project, covering a section of highway just over a mile in length, is expected to be completed by this fall. The project will include improvements to drainage, bridge work and paving.

Payne’s 49-year custom harvesting career comes to an end
THE IMPERIAL REPUBLICAN, March 9 — At the age of 20 years old, Scott Payne leased his first combine in 1968 and joined his ex-father-in-law in his custom harvesting operation. That love for custom harvesting and running the combine got in his blood, triggering a career that would span 49 years.

Eventually, all good things come to an end. For Scott and Linda, his wife of 44 years, that came March 1 when they liquidated all the equipment of their custom harvesting operation, S & L Farms.

The auction drew hundreds from far and near, along with several hundred more registered bidders on the internet.

School board announces closing of the Lodgepole Middle School site
THE CHAPPELL REGISTER, March 9 — A special meeting of the Creek Valley Board of Education was held Tuesday, Feb. 28, to consider action pertaining to the closing of the middle school in Lodgepole, Nebraska. It was announced that they will be closing the Lodgepole school site at the end of the school year in May.

Kindergarten through sixth-grade students will attend classes at the Chappell, Nebraska, elementary, and seventh- and eighth-grade students will attend the Creek Valley High School.

Big & Rich head up Night Show
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, March 11 — The Logan County Fair Board has landed a big act with a rich history for this year’s night show.

During the March Business After Hours gathering at the Logan County Chamber of Commerce headquarters, the board announced it has contracted with Big & Rich to headline this year’s East Cheyenne Gas Storage Night Show Aug. 13. Cowboy Troy, a fellow member of the musical aggregate known as the Muzik Mafia, will open.
