Late sugar beet processing a concern for local producers
THE YUMA PIONEER, March 23 — Sugar beets remain a hot topic as a delay in processing and warm weather have caused at least some troubles with the piles in Yuma County
“This past week was tough,” farmer Dave Blach said. He has been active with the Western Sugar Cooperative for several years. “It’s not widespread yet, but it’s only a matter of time.”
As reported last month, delays in completing renovation upgrades at Western Sugar’s processing plant in Fort Morgan, as well as in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, led to a late start in processing the beets from the 2016 harvest, which was a very good one in Yuma County.
Normally, the local piles east of Yuma and by Kirk are completely transported to the plant by February. However, due to the delays, the beets did not start getting shipped until this month.
Plus, the area has experienced mostly unseasonably warm weather since early February.

NJC celebrates diamond anniversary
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, April 3 — In the spring of 1941, when five members of the District No. 12 Board of Education and the Logan County High School Committee, as private citizens, filed articles of incorporation to form a junior college, little did they know what that college would become 75 years later.
