ACLU targets Yuma, other cities over panhandling laws
YUMA PIONEER, Aug. 30 — American Civil Liberties Union sent letters to Yuma and 30 other cities across the state earlier this week demanding a repeal of what the ACLU termed as unconstitutional laws that restrict panhandling.
Yuma City Manager Scott Moore said the City was expecting the letter. He said the City was already in the process, prior to receiving the letter, of making changes to its code to reflect court rulings regarding the U.S. Constitution and First Amendment rights.
Moore said the City does have panhandling laws but it has never been enforced and likely would never have to be enforced in a community like Yuma.

200 truckloads a day: Sugar beet campaign starts
FORT MORGAN TIMES, Aug. 31 — September is here and so are preparations for one of the biggest operations in town: Western Sugar Cooperative’s annual sugar beet processing campaign.
Every year, Western Sugar operates its factory at full capacity between the months of September and March. This year, the process starts on Sept. 7.
To prepare for this year’s campaign, Western Sugar hired 90 seasonal employees to assist its 115 full-time workers with their regular sugar beet processing responsibilities. Most of the plant’s workers, both full-time and seasonal, come from Morgan County.
“Our process is very complicated and has many positions,” said Heather Luther, vice president of Western Sugar. “Our employees operate equipment that unloads the beets, slices them for sugar juice extraction, then boils and crystallizes the sugar juice prior to packaging for sale.”
Last year’s campaign yielded a company record of 35.1 tons of sugar produced per acre; this year’s estimation nears 34.6 tons per acre with approximately 17 percent sugar extraction from the beets.
