Pasture walk is June 9

There are not many streams in Yuma County with 365 days of running water. An active beaver population is even rarer. The Black Wolf has both, and the results are amazing.

Gregg, Chris and Brad Stults, along with the Yuma County Conservation District, invite the public to join them for a pasture walk on the Black Wolf. Meet them at 8 a.m. Friday, June 9, at Gregg and Mary Ann Stults’ house. Their home is at 29582 CR 28, just west off of Highway 385 south of Wray. On 385, drive 2 miles south of the correction line or 2 miles north of the Vernon road. The group will enjoy coffee and rolls before gathering into pickups to travel to the Black Wolf.

This will be a less formal event than past field days. The Stultses will share their history on the property and the conditions that led to the appearance of the beaver. Of interest to the group will be the current livestock grazing management strategy and challenges and compromises with the beaver.

Julie Elliott will shed light on how a river system works in general. Elliott is a rangeland management specialist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Attendees will learn why beaver are a priceless (albeit challenging) asset, not just to the Stultses. The neighbors downstream will also reap the benefits.
