PCR season ends on dramatic note

Sept. 30 was the last event of the season at Phillips County Raceway, but the series ended with much excitement and kept fans on the edge of their seats. Although Friday night races were canceled due to weather, drivers traveled from near and far to compete on Saturday, several for their first time at PCR.
Sprint cars competed in the season championship, racing for Colorado Alliance Tour high points. Although Jake Martens took first in the Sept. 30 feature, Zac Taylor claimed the victory in season points with 259. Lonnie Cox finished the season second with 251, followed by Todd Pudwill 231.
Also at Saturday’s races were late models, providing one of the most nail-biting shows of the season. The feature started with a nasty wreck that took some time to remove one car from on top of another. No laps had been complete, so they went to an original restart.
Late in the race, the second-place Justin Bussell made a move to successfully pass Dakota Berry. Before the lap was finished, however, the yellow flag came out, meaning drivers returned to the order they were in at the beginning of the lap, and Berry came out ahead.
Some fans were clearly unhappy with the call, but a similar scenario in the sport mods feature that followed immediately reiterated that an ill-timed wreck or car troubles can make or break a race for another driver. In the case of the sport mods, Ronnie Hults was trying to pass teammate Tony Dugan, who ended up with the win.
In the hobby stocks feature, the real action was in the race for second place. Luke Wassom took an easy first place, but Colt Gibbs and Curt Kennedy were neck and neck for second until the very end when Gibbs pulled ahead.
