Pedal cars on display at The Orphanage

Over 20 pedal cars will be on display at The Orphanage at 300 S. Main St. in Yuma from July 2 through Sept. 26. Hours at the gallery are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesday-Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays. The Orphanage is closed Mondays.

The pedal cars are on loan from several local collectors and the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver.

Soon after automobiles appeared on the scene, the toy pedal car followed. Pedal cars date back to the 1890s, and the cost, early on, ensured that only the wealthy could afford them. Pedal cars reached a peak of popularity in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with a resurgence in the 1950s and 1960s.
