Peekin’ into the past

Five Years Ago —Sept. 1, 2016

Delbert “Deb” and Emily Haynes were honored at the Colorado State Fair on Aug. 26 as owners of a Colorado Centennial Farm, the property having been in the family for 100 years.

St. Patrick’s Catholic Church is undergoing its first major renovation since 1963. The three-phase project includes providing improved handicapped accessibility, classrooms for religious education and a new social hall.

Duane Harms’ farm, just north of Paoli, formerly belonging to his grandfather John Harms and before that his great-grandfather Fred Gansemer, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

 

Ten Years Ago — Sept. 1, 2011

East Phillips County Hospital Board members voted at the Aug. 23 meeting to move forward with a project that will see a renovation to a room in the hospital to accommodate a brand-new digital mammography machine.

Having served in some capacity or another with Dragon’s Wagon Preschool for the past 21 years, Marcia Walter is continuing her education and is currently student teaching with Holyoke kindergarten teacher Kari Sandquist.

Allie Billings, who will graduate in December from UNC in Greeley with a degree in elementary education with an ESL emphasis, is spending her time student teaching with Holyoke fifth grade teacher Natalie Krogmeier.

With a love of sports and coaching, Cutter Garrison is currently student teaching with elementary physical education teacher Scott Dille and will spend the spring semester with JR/SR high physical education teacher Kyle Bules.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago —Sept. 5, 1996

Holyoke received almost 2 inches of rainfall Aug. 28-29, and extensive rains west of Holyoke eventually caused the creekbeds to overflow in town.

City of Holyoke officials are considering buying land and an irrigation well for $325,000. City council held a special meeting Aug. 29 to discuss the water well status and voted to accept an offer from Clarence and Bernice Stout to sell the city 318 acres of land including the irrigation well currently on the land. The acreage is located 2 1/2 miles south of Holyoke.

Garet Groshans of Paoli recently placed in the Colorado Junior Rodeo Association state rodeo competition in three events. The 8-year-old received first-place honors in barrel racing, fourth in pole bending and fifth in the flag race in his age division. For his efforts, Garet won a leather saddle, a belt buckle and a $100 scholarship to be used when he goes to college.

 

Fifty Years Ago —Sept. 2, 1971

Holyoke Furniture Co., owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Doyle Skinner, has moved to its new location in the Schneller building at the corner of Denver and Campbell streets. The building previously occupied by the furniture store has been purchased by Dale Hofmeister. Plans are to remodel the building to house the grocery business he will open in the near future.

Western Construction Company, Scottsbluff, Nebraska, has started mounting pole hardware and stringing TV cable in Holyoke this week. The building that is to house the TV equipment has been constructed at the site on Loughman hill, and the tower is at the site and will be erected in the near future.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — Sept. 5, 1946

The Holyoke Enterprise was purchased Tuesday of this week by Max Starbuck. Starbuck has learned the printing trade in this shop, having worked for the late E.W. Lindberg for 14 years and for F.B. Kelly for three years.

The nation right now is experiencing what may prove to be one of the largest polio epidemics in the recorded history of the disease in this country.

Initial plans for an intensive drive were made Monday night for the Northeast Colorado Memorial Hospital to be located in Haxtun and were discussed by the town hospital committee of Haxtun in a meeting held in the city hall.
