Five Years Ago — Sept. 28, 2017

Holyoke schools will soon be joining a nationwide program to encourage daily physical activity. The 100 Mile Club will be an opportunity for students, parents and community members to walk, run or jog with the goal of logging 100 miles during the school year. The club will kick off with Walk to School Day on Oct. 4.

Baby Box University, a new program available to new and expectant mothers, is being promoted by Baby Bear Hugs. The Baby Box Company established this initiative, taking inspiration from Finland’s model. The company developed this innovative program to equip parents with education and resources to give their babies a safe start in life. Baby boxes can be used as a safe sleep space for a baby’s first five to six months of life. 

 

Ten Years Ago — Sept. 27, 2012

Janismarie Oberle is excited to take over as the new after-school instructor at Phillips County Family Education Services. The free educational-based program, which is grant funded, meets at Phillips County Event Center Mondays-Thursdays from a little before 4 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. and follows the school calendar.

Holyoke Police Department is still looking for those involved in an incident that took place sometime Tuesday night, Sept. 4, between the 200 and 700 blocks of South Baxter Avenue. Reports were received Sept. 5 about multiple slashed vehicle tires along the west side of Baxter Avenue in Holyoke.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago — Oct. 2, 1997

The identity of a suspect being held in a double homicide investigation has finally been revealed, after having been a mystery since his arrest in May. Armando Hernandez aka John Doe has been identified as David Ramirez, 24.

A recycling drive on Sept. 24 was highly successful as it kicked off the opening of the new recycling center in Holyoke. Recyclables that had been set out by residents were picked up by volunteers and delivered to the Holyoke Recycles center at 400 N. Interocean Ave.

The This and That Shop, described by owners Barb and Bill Freier as a flea market type of business, will be opening very soon in the former Holyoke Variety Store at 118 N. Interocean Ave. Over 20 spaces have already been rented for selling items.

Basically Business, based in Wray, is opening a new location in Holyoke. The business, which concentrates on copy and fax services, UPS shipping, and the sale of office supplies, business machines, and cards and gifts, is owned by Ed and Cindi Grauberger of Wray. Basically Business will be located in the front end of the KN building at 116 N. Interocean Ave. after the eye clinic moves out.

 

Fifty Years Ago — Sept. 28, 1972

On Thursday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 on the Dragon football field there will be a class competition candlelight service in honor of the soon-to-be-defeated Julesburg Lions. Following the candlelight competition, there will be a short pep rally. Come and support the Dragons for homecoming and the whole season.

Everyone interested is invited to a free short course in how modern welding equipment can save them valuable time and money on repair jobs — complete with a welding demonstration covering all procedures and techniques. Those who attend will be invited to try the modern welding equipment.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — Oct. 2, 1947

The income of Colorado farmers during the rest of this year is expected to hold above the high level of a year ago, setting a new record for annual income and topping 1946 by almost 25%, according to a summary of agricultural conditions released this week by T.H. Summers, agricultural economist for the Colorado A&M College Extension Service. The increased income will be partially offset by higher prices paid for goods and services. During the first half of this year, prices paid by farmers showed a 26.2% increase over 1946.

The Business and Professional Women’s Club will sponsor an old-fashioned frolic and square dance at the Legion Hall next Wednesday night, Oct. 8, as one of the features of their activities for National Business Women’s Week, Oct. 5-12.

The sale of the 400 head of cattle on the Thornton Ranch near Gunnison proved to be the greatest event of that kind in the history of the state. They brought a total of $875,940, which was an average of $2,305 per head.
