    After nearly a year and a half of construction, the congregation of First Baptist Church of Holyoke is ready to make the move to the new church facility at 1000 E. Johnson St. The first official services will be held there this weekend.
    Phillips County residents can now self-register cellphones and email addresses to receive emergency notifications.
    Savanna Krueger of Holyoke claimed first-place honors in the VFW District IV Voice of Democracy speech contest. Her essay is now competing in the state contest.

    Angel Sebastian Gutierrez Cid took first baby of the year honors for 2008 as he was born at Melissa Memorial Hospital Jan. 10 to Mario Gutierrez and Leonor Cid of Holyoke.
    With the bylaws approved and officers appointed, the new Partners in Education organization is ready to get down to the business of getting parents and community members involved in the school system.
    Troy’s Auto Sales, located at 430 E. Denver St. in Holyoke, closed at the first of the year. The dealership still has two locations in Sterling and one in Sidney, Nebraska.
    In an effort to foster positive behavior among students, a Positive Behavior Support team in Holyoke School District Re-1J monitors and rewards good deeds by students. Looking to expand the program to the full community, the PBS team is planning to talk about it with Holyoke City Council and Holyoke Chamber of Commerce.

    Bob Christiansen, who has served as director of Social Services for Phillips and Sedgwick counties since March 1, 1991, has announced his resignation, effective in mid-February.
    Dr. Patricia Mayer, a rheumatologist from Greeley, began holding regular clinics in Holyoke this month as the newest specialist affiliated with Melissa Memorial Hospital.
    Cellular telephone users are now able to report suspected drunken drivers immediately by calling *DUI, Governor Roy Romer announced recently.

Jan. 18, 1968

    More than 2,000 insured farmers in 15 Colorado counties received $3,126,000 in Federal Crop Insurance payments for 1967 crop losses. Counties where insured loss payments topped $250,000 were Phillips, Cheyenne, Kit Carson, Logan and Washington.
    Approximately 225 high school and grade school band members are expected to be here Saturday, Jan. 20, to participate in the annual Holyoke Honor Band Clinic. About 35 schools from 21 towns will be represented, including five Nebraska towns.

Jan. 21, 1943

    In an effort to enlist 150,000 women in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in the United States, a concerted drive is being conducted over the nation to increase enlistments. Women thus recruited will be used to replace men in the Army now doing clerical work, releasing men for combat duty.
    Dave Lounsberry was appointed town marshal at a meeting of the town board Tuesday night. He succeeds H.E. Christensen, who will take up other work.
    Holyoke’s fire loss in 1942 was only $68 from the seven fires for which fire alarms were turned in, according to the report of F.W. Lutze, fire warden, made to the town board on Monday night. Of this loss, $18 was covered by insurance, leaving an uninsured loss of $50.
